Getting An Interview Requires More Than Just A Resume And Cover Letter

Have you been in the job market for a while? You may look at your resume and  cover letter and wonder why you haven’t had any of your calls returned. Everything appears to be in order. You’ve listed your accomplishments and included data to support your role in the past. You’ve personalized your cover letter each time for the specific job. So what are you missing? Getting an interview requires a little more than just a resume and a cover letter. Here are some of the things you can be doing to increase your chances.

Create a list of target companies.

The worst thing a job seeker can do is blindly send resumes into the recruiting black hole. To avoid getting your resume lost in a lot of shuffles, spend some time researching the companies that you really want to work for. Learn what they do, how they do it, their company values, and how you may fit in with their work culture. Then create a strategy to apply with them.

Develop personal marketing material.

Think about the brands you love. They have logos and marketing campaigns that help demonstrate their quality and worth to potential customers. These visual cues are what make people remember Coca-Cola, Apple, and Nike (to name a few). There are many online resources that can help you create logos and produce business cards to represent yourself to potential employers.

Take your brand online.

But don’t just keep your brand in your back pocket. Share it with the world. The internet makes it very easy to share information, and the best and brightest are creating online profiles and portfolios to attract employers to them. Buy a website domain name, create a blog, and join the major social media networks. Use these platforms to promote yourself as a thought leader.

Network in your community.

While it is important to use online tools to successfully conduct a job search, it is also essential that you get out in your community and meet other professionals. You never know who can help you with a new job or who they might know. Attend industry events or mixers to get your brand out there.

Call the hiring manager.

Lastly, before you apply for a job and after you’ve submitted your resume, it is perfectly acceptable to contact the hiring manager. Unless the job posting indicates they do not accept phone calls, call the company and ask to speak with the manager before sending your resume. Be polite and not aggressive. Ask them what they’re looking for so you can customize your application. Then, after you’ve submitted your resume, you can follow up after about a week if you haven’t heard back.
