Have a Plan When Attending Your Next Job Fair

September 11th, 2015

Job fairs can be a colossal waste of time if you’re not properly prepared. But if you have a plan of attack and stick to it, then the job fair can be one of the best hidden tools of a job search. Because of their popularity, not everyone in the building will have created a plan to help them navigate and network the best way possible. Here are some things you can do to make sure you’re ahead of the competition at your next job fair.

Make a good first impression

Your plan should start before you even set foot in the convention center. You won’t be meeting for interviews, but you should treat it like one. Dress professionally, establish an elevator speech that will give the person an idea of who you are and what you’re looking for, and always be courteous. Bring your resume and business cards and be sure to get their contact info.

Create a map and plan

Job fairs sometimes feel like a herd of cattle shuffling along. It shouldn’t feel like that. You may be just one person in a sea of thousands of job seekers but you don’t have to act that way. You are the one in complete control. When you arrive review the list of businesses attending and make a game plan. Only visit the top companies and introduce yourself to them in a professional manner. If you can’t see yourself working for that company then don’t waste your time standing in line to meet with their representatives.

Introduce yourself

There will be a good portion of the event spent standing in line. You can use this time to make connections with others in your community. Introduce yourself, ask them what they’re looking for, and see if you can connect them to others in your network. A lot of people will have nerves, so breaking the ice and getting the ball rolling can open unexpected connections. You will get a reputation in your community as a connector, which will only enhance your position as a professional. You can give them your business cards as well.

Always follow up

Now that you’ve collected all of these business cards you need to do something with them. The very next day, sit down and send out thank you emails that reference the conversations you had with them at their booth or in line. This is your opportunity to make a lasting impression and help you stand out from the crowd. If you feel comfortable, connect with those people on LinkedIn and continue the networking process.
