Make the Right First Impression at Your New Job

The first days at a new job can be terrifying. You don’t know anyone in the office, save for the interviewers, and you don’t know if they’re going to like you or vice versa. Your co-workers, managers, and all the other employees will begin to form their own first impressions in your first days, weeks, and months on the job. So how do you start off on the right foot and be successful in your new position? Let’s take a closer look.

Prepare ahead of time

Your first day doesn’t actually start on your first day. There are a lot of steps you can take prior to the time you arrive. Consider your wardrobe. Do you need to buy anything new? Do you need to make sure your route will work with the morning rush hour traffic so you’re not late? Do you need to re-acclimate your system to waking up earlier in the morning?

Don’t be late

The single most important thing you can do on the first day of a new job is to arrive on time. You can even arrive early, but not too early. (If you do show up really early, you can stay in your car and read your mobile device. If you’re taking public transportation, go for a short walk and give yourself plenty of time to return.) Arriving late for your first day of work you will set the tone for how everyone else in the office will react to you. They will expect that this will become a pattern. Instead, establish the pattern that you’re reliable.

Take notes

Your first days, and weeks, will be a lot of learning. Even if you’ve done a similar job before you’ll need to learn the policies and procedures of your new organization. Don’t forget to bring a small notebook and a pen with you on the first day. Write down the things you learn so you don’t have to ask again in the near future. Once you write them down, look at the notes to help ingrain the new information. Don’t just leave it on the notepad and never revisit it.

Ask questions

But speaking of questions, don’t forget to ask them as you go. If you don’t understand exactly how something is done, clarify before you write down your notes. If you want to know how one step leads to another, ask. There are no stupid questions, but there are better times to ask the questions than others.

Take initiative

Lastly, don’t be afraid to jump in and contribute. As you begin to get comfortable with the tasks at hand, take more responsibility to finish them on your own. But, don’t go full steam ahead without accepting feedback from your co-workers or supervisors. This combination will give you a good chance at success and a great first impression with the company.
