Conflict Resolution – 4 Tips to Help in a Heated Call Center Discussion

September 27th, 2018

Every call center employee knows the experience. A caller is already angry and upset before their call is answered and they’re immediately on the defensive. Often, they’ll take out their frustrations on the one person they feel has control over the situation, whether or not that’s actually true. So how do call center professionals manage conflict on customer calls? Here are four tips to help in a heated call center discussion

1. Let them vent.

The first thing is to let the customer vent about their frustrations. Sometimes, this is all they really want is for someone to listen. So regardless of whether or not it’s all relevant, let them tell you about why they’re unhappy. Listen to them and when you can ask clarifying questions to help them get to the point where you can help them.

2. Be kind.

When we are attacked, even if it isn’t personal, it’s easy to respond by getting defensive. But when dealing with angry customers on the phone, the key is to be kind and not argue with them. They don’t understand the rules of your workplace, and that isn’t their job. By not taking it personally, you can try to get to the bottom line and be kind to them when answering their questions.

3. Compromise.

In some cases, there may be ownership of the problem on all sides. But your customer just wants it fixed. If there are ways you can, try to compromise as much as possible when the issue requires advanced problem-solving needs. Even if you feel the customer is entitled to nothing, try to do what you can to give them what they need to be satisfied without compromising your company.

4. Deliver more.

If you can, try to deliver more than they’re expecting. This can go a long way toward encouraging continued customer loyalty. Consumers just want things to be easy, so if you can go above and beyond their expectations, they are much more likely to not only continue with your products or services but to refer people. You are often only as good as the last problem you solved.

An Online Degree – How Do You Evaluate the Job Candidate?

September 20th, 2018

There was a time when seeing a degree on someone’s resume was incredibly important for hiring managers. But the world is changing, and the employment arena needed to adjust with the times. Today, more and more professionals are opting to get their degrees online, sometimes from start to finish, and sometimes as a degree completion program if they left undergrad before they finished. So how do employers evaluate a job candidate who brings an online degree to the table? Here are some practical tips.

Define the role.

Before you even begin looking at candidates for your open position, be sure that you’re properly defining it. What are the requirements and why do they exist. If you need a degree, why do you need that? Could someone also apply if they don’t have a degree but have several years related experience? How would an online degree play into their qualifications, if at all?

Create standardized criteria.

Once you define the role, create a standardized system of criteria. This way, you are able to compare apples to apples rather than trying to fit square pegs into round holes. When you create a list of all the possible criteria required for a position, do make sure you’re allowing for some variation or you’re only going to see the same candidates over and over again.

Understand the different online programs.

Of course, it is also on you to make sure you better understand online degree programs and what they mean. For example, is there a difference between a degree completion program and online courses? Does the program provide certification or a degree? Is the university accredited?

Be clear about expectations.

When you do interview, be clear about the expectations of the job. Just because someone has an online degree doesn’t mean they’re incapable to accomplish the tasks at hand. When you’re clear about the expectations, the online degree program doesn’t matter as much as the potential employee’s ability to do the work necessary for success.

10th Anniversary of Hurricane Ike

September 13th, 2018

Ten years ago today, our Pasadena Corporate office and Deer Park location sustained serious damage from Hurricane Ike .

Living up to our core values of having a heart for the people and community and sense of duty to our candidates and clients, our team came together to create small miracles in the midst of our own trials.

  • Our CEO and others worked in the lobby/reception area of the Teleworld Staffing office
  • Our Pasadena Temporary Hiring division worked in the Clear Lake office from a conference room table
  • Our Direct Hire team relocated to our Pearland office
  • Our staff support team worked in a warehouse
  • A new employee with the Deer Park team and found herself learning on the job. She even invited the Deer Park team to come to her house and work from her kitchen table
  • We even set up a tent in the parking lot of the office to hand out paychecks to our temporary employees

It took us 9 months to move back in. This speaks to the tenacity, concern for the community, and dedication to others that our employees show us on a daily basis. We are so thankful for such a wonderful team!

We are praying for those on the west coast who are awaiting Hurricane Florence. Stay safe!

4 Must-Dos to Get Your Resume Past the Screening Robots

September 13th, 2018

It has been the new normal in the recruiting industry for a while that the first step of any resume submission is to a database. Recruiters will use technology to search for keywords when they are looking for the top resumes for an open position. So, your job is not only to impress the recruiter at the other end of the process but also get past the resume screening bots that can put your application in their hands. Here are a few tips to get you started.

Use simple and sharp formatting.

Just like people, computers don’t do well with huge blocks of text. It is advisable to utilize very simple and focused formatting. Creating simple bullets that will draw attention and keeping out a lot of extraneous narrative will be your best bet. You want to make sure it is easily readable, and in many cases, scannable for the system.

Add Keywords from the Job Posting

Another thing that screening robots do is search for keywords. You can find out what the appropriate words to include are by reviewing the job posting. But be cautious about overusing them. Don’t use words that don’t apply to your own background. Focus on creating good points about the skills you possess.

Be Sure to Spell Check

One thing that will often kick a resume back from the screening bots is a lack of attention to detail. This is especially true if you’re unable to catch common spelling errors or errors that might impact the way your resume is interpreted. Spell check everything. Have someone else look at your resume to catch anything you’ve missed.

Don’t Include an Objective

It may sound counterproductive, but including an objective is no longer necessary and doesn’t do anything to help screening robots select your resume. An objective can narrowly focus your resume unnecessarily. Even without resume screening robots, objectives are really no longer in fashion on resumes. Instead, replace it with a list of your accomplishments.

Do Your Employees Fear You? Is That What You Want? How to Determine the Right Leadership Style

September 6th, 2018

It’s a tale as old as time: The angry boss barking orders at resigned employees wishing they were anywhere else but at their jobs. But is ruling with the iron fist really the best way to get good work out of your team? If your employees fear you, it may be time for some deep introspection to determine if that is, in fact, the way you want to be a leader. Here are some things to consider to determine a more productive leadership style.

Ask, don’t demand.

There is a big difference between asking and demanding. Demanding that a task is completed comes across as aggressive while asking your employee to complete a project shows that you respect their time. Asking also creates a culture of gratitude, which is contagious around an office and helps everyone stay motivated.

Let go when necessary.

There is a lot of dialogue lately around the concept of winning. But the truth is, life and business aren’t a competition. It’s important to let go of the idea that your way is the only right way and allow your team to use their own skills and abilities to complete tasks their way. If you let go of your control, you’ll also find that you’re able to concentrate on more strategic matters that come with leadership.

Really listen.

Humans tend to only listen for as long as it takes to formulate a response. That means you’re already ready to reply before you’ve heard an entire story. You may want to take a step back and hear what your employees are really saying when they’re talking with you. And your new listening skills will build more trust over time.

Leave anger behind.

If you have a short temper and use it to rule your department with an iron fist, you may find that you’re experiencing more personnel problems than you’re solving. The truth is, if you are having trouble with turnover or people following your directions, the problem might not lie with your team. You may want to figure out how to alter your own behavior to create a better system.
