Our Top 5 Tips for Managers from 2017

January 4th, 2018

Every year, it’s our goal to provide quality content for job seekers and managers. In 2017, we offered plenty of advice to make managers, executives, and supervisors excel in their jobs. So what were our top 5 tips for the year? And what can you do to ensure that you’re starting 2018 off on the right foot? Before we start with more tips and ideas for the New Year, let’s take a look back at what we shared already.

1. Reduce your time to fill with better candidates.

In February, we discussed the ways that managers can reduce their overall time to hire by taking a few simple steps. These include staying in contact with a top candidate you didn’t hire, connecting on social media, and streamlining your hiring process. We also suggest that working with a staffing partner can help reduce stress and the time to hire.

2. Why employees quit and what you can do about it.

In July, we talked about the startling statistics about how many employees quit their jobs due to dissatisfaction. But this is a trend that can be altered by employers. We looked at the reasons people quit and what you can do about them. They include reasons such as a lack of personal connection, no challenge, stagnant career growth, and workplace stress.

3. How a local staffing agency can be your best partner.

But we also shared the reasons why working with a local staffing agency can boost your company’s productivity and help you hire the best and the brightest. We suggest that developing a relationship with an agency, working with a smaller specialized company, and partnering with the agency’s top executives can be a great strategy for your hiring goals.

4. The top 3 skills to look for in marketing talent.

If hiring top marketing talent is your top priority, we have you covered there as well. In April we shared some insight on the top skills that marketing professionals should bring to the table. If you focus on their understanding of analytics, their experience with content marketing systems, and their use of video, you will have an advantage in the marketplace.

5. When to stop the onboarding process for new employees.

We also took a look at the onboarding process and what it means to bring someone up to speed before declaring the process complete. We suggest that every employer be ready for their new team member on the very first day. We also encourage employers to create a mentorship program, assess the employee weekly, ask for input from the new employee, and look at the results rather than the processes of their work.

5 Tips to Make Office Safety a Priority This Year

December 21st, 2017

Many people don’t equate safety programs with a standard office job. They think of it is solely an issue for warehouses or fabrication jobs. But the truth is, every employer is responsible for ensuring a safe environment for their team and every employee deserves this care. So maybe you want to make office safety a priority in 2018. Here are 5 tips to get you started.

Listen to your employees.

If there are any concerns in the office, make sure you listen to your employees about them. Things can be rectified easily as long as you have knowledge of what’s happening, so keep an ear open. If you hear anything about a situation that may be unsafe for your team, do something about it immediately. That could mean anything from a physically unsafe situation to a mentally unsafe situation involving bullying or harassment.

Provide updated training.

Throughout the year, make sure you’re providing regular safety training to your team. Include situations such as fire prevention and escape, slip and fall prevention, and harassment or violence in the workplace prevention. Take everything seriously and allow for your team to learn what they need to know to remain safe in the workplace.

Invest in good office equipment.

Ergonomics is the science of how our bodies interact with our environment. It became very popular in offices a few decades ago, but with good reason. A good desk chair or keyboard set up is essential to keep your employees safe from unnecessary injury on the job. Don’t buy cheap equipment that will break down or be uncomfortable to use after only a short period of time. If you invest in good equipment, everyone can stay safe and comfortable.

Encourage proactive solutions.

One of the keys to office safety is empowerment. Empowering your team to make the right decision when necessary could make all the difference. With this in mind, encourage your team to think proactively about every solution so when a problem does come up, they can think quickly and take the appropriate action which can prevent further unsafe conditions in the workplace.

Continue throughout the year.

One challenge many companies have is that they resolve at the first of the year to implement these safety provisions, but after a few months, the interest wanes. But safety doesn’t work like that, so it’s imperative that you keep these initiatives going throughout the year. Provide continual training, incentives for safe behavior, and make safety a priority in your workplace.

Is Temp-to-Hire Your Path to a Full-Time Job in 2018?

December 14th, 2017

If you’ve been in the job market you’re probably aware of temp to hire opportunities. But maybe you’ve been concerned about taking on a role like this because you’re uncertain how it would impact your career path. But there are many reasons to consider temp-to-hire. Before you kick off the New Year in 2018, consider these potential benefits to working with a staffing agency to find a temp-to-hire position for you.

It can lead to full-time work.

The ultimate goal of a temp-to-hire position is to lead to full-time work, but that doesn’t mean your work is done when you accept the job. The employer is using this time to evaluate your performance and experience to make sure you’re the right person for their permanent position. If you do a great job throughout the temporary portion, you will be offered that permanent position.

It gives you a chance to try out the job.

But the experience goes both ways. Temp-to-hire means that you also get to check out the company and the specific job to determine if it is right for you. If you have any concerns or hesitations, you can discuss it with your recruiter and work out a solution for the problem or terminate the assignment and look for something else.

It builds relationships with a recruiter.

Your recruiter becomes your employment partner. They can work with you to find the right position. If one doesn’t work out, you can use that experience to find a better match. But it will also build a long-term working relationship that can last into the future if you’re ever in the hunt for another position or you are in a position to hire for your new organization.

It can get you working faster.

Many companies approach a staffing agency before they advertise a position to the general public. This means when you are established with an agency you will hear about new positions before they are published online or through any other local channels. Your recruiter wants to have you working as quickly as possible so they will do what they can to ensure that you are not out of the job market for very long.

Become a Great Call Center Manager in 2018

December 7th, 2017

Did you know that managing a call center is very different than other types of management positions? In this case, you need to ensure your staff is up to date with the latest news, policies, and information, as well as manage the caller experience every day. Priorities and details may change weekly or even daily. If you want to establish your places as a top quality call center manager, here are some ways you can stand out in your field.

Manage different personalities.

There is no cookie-cutter option for call center employees. And when you’re working with a high volume of call center representatives, you’re going to be face to face with all different kinds of personality types. It’s your job as their manager to be able to work with all of them effectively and efficiently. Learning how to manage different personality types will help you flourish as a manager.

Determine the right metrics.

Management can be very reactionary, but this shouldn’t be the basis for all evaluation. Instead, make sure you’re using the right metrics to measure employee performance, employee and caller satisfaction, and other aspects of the day to day call center environment. These reports will help you see patterns over time and be able to manage appropriately.

Be solutions oriented.

Due to the nature of the job, there will undoubtedly be problems that occur in the workplace with your representatives. But rather than a kneejerk reaction, as a manager, you should be trying to determine the best solutions. Always approach a problem with the idea that it can be solved. Complaining about solutions won’t be productive for anyone.

Work with a staffing agency.

Call centers have high turnover no matter how good a manager you are. With that in mind, it’s important to establish a good relationship with a source for new valuable candidates. You can work with a staffing partner who specializes in call center placements who can help you find good replacements quickly and not impact your employee productivity.

Quotes to Show Gratitude Every Day

November 30th, 2017

Now that Thanksgiving has passed us by and we’re starting to get ready for the December Holiday season, we should continue to take the time to be grateful every day. Gratitude shouldn’t be reserved for one Thursday in November, it should be a mindset to help you every day of the year. If you want to be more grateful this year and into 2018, here are some wise words to give you continued inspiration through the season and beyond.

1. “Feeling gratitude and not expressing it is like wrapping a present and not giving it.” William Arthur Ward.

Don’t just think it, say it. No matter what, and no matter when. If you are thankful for the actions of others, tell them. If you are thankful for a situation or an outcome, say it out loud. Gratitude is contagious and if you begin to spread it, a culture of gratitude will emerge.

2. “As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words but to live by them.” John F. Kennedy.

Additionally, just saying the words is a great start, but thankfulness is an attitude. It involves more than just statements but actions that demonstrate your gratitude toward others in your family, work, and community.

3. “Silent gratitude isn’t very much to anyone.” Gertrude Stein.

W
e can’t stress enough that the true key to having gratitude in your life is expressing gratitude towards others. Say it loud, say it often, and don’t only say it when expected. Silence is the killer of gratitude and, often, productivity as well.

4. “You cannot do a kindness too soon because you never know how soon it will be too late.” Ralph Waldo Emerson.

One of the reasons for making sure you say thank you when it matters is because you never know when it will be too late to say it at all. On a macro level, this applies to your loved ones. But also applies to situations at your work in your community because you may never get that chance back to tell someone they’ve made a difference.

5. “This a wonderful day. I’ve never seen this one before.” Maya Angelou.

Remember, gratitude is something you can feel each and every day regardless of the specific situation. If you’re having a bad day, for example, focus on the positive things rather than what’s going wrong. That can change your entire attitude for the better and turn the tide.

Effective Ways to Show You’re Thankful for Your Staff Year Round, Not Just at Thanksgiving

November 16th, 2017

Thanksgiving is the time that most of us celebrate gratitude, but that doesn’t mean it should only be practiced on the fourth Thursday of November. They say that it isn’t happy people who are thankful, but thankful people who are happy. And that can be advice easily applied to our employees and our workplace. How can you thank your team for simply being who they are now and in the future? Use this holiday to kick off a year of showing gratitude so you can see how thankfulness can become contagious in the best ways in your workplace.

Get to know them personally.

Some managers believe they should take a step back from their employee’s personal lives. But this can create a great divide between staff and management. While you don’t need to get involved in their every day, your employees will appreciate when you take a personal interest in their lives. What do they like? What do they do when they’re not at work? How can you nurture those aspects of their lives?

Surprise them with fun events and prizes.

Gratitude can be all about the unexpected. When your team expects it that’s when you get entitlement mentality. However, when you throw in a bit of mystery, that can really help benefit your team and your company overall. Surprise them with events just to show your gratitude. Give prizes when they’re least expected. This will keep everyone excited about the prospect in the future.

Learn what they want to do in the future.

You can show your gratitude in a variety of ways, including through personal professional development. Find out what makes each of your employees tick and do what you can to encourage that. Provide on-the-job training. Give them additional projects. Find the right career paths for them within your organization.

Care for their overall wellbeing.

You should also take time to care about them as a whole person. You’re getting to know their personality and their professional self, but what about their overall health as a person. Give them the opportunity to maintain a healthy lifestyle, an appropriate work/life balance, and the tools to have a stress-free work environment.

Job Candidates Should Apply Even When They Don’t Meet Every Requirement

November 9th, 2017

There are two kinds of job seekers in the world. The ones who feel like they have to live up to every possible aspect of a job description before sending in their resume and the ones who decide to just go for it. But should be you the person who just goes for it? What if you don’t meet every requirement? Should you still apply? There may be cases where applying anyway can get you the job when you employ the right strategy. Here’s how to do it.

Know the job description is a dream candidate.

Always keep in mind that the job description includes every possible requirement that the company would like to see in an ideal candidate. That doesn’t mean they will automatically get applicants that check all the boxes. If you feel that you check most of them, it still may be worth it to throw your hat in the ring.

Demonstrate why you’re the best person for the job.

Once you do apply, it is your job to prove to the hiring manager that you are the person they want to talk to about this job. Incorporate the specifics of the job with your past experience to help them see how you can be a problem solver for them. Express your interest in their company specifically, not just any job.

Showcase the skills you have and value you bring.

When sharing with them your experience, be sure to highlight the things that you bring to the table that can improve their business and fit their role. Spend time on the top qualities that they’re looking for that you also possess. Maintain a positive attitude and a cool confidence.

Don’t focus on the things you can’t do.

Finally, make sure that you’re not focusing on the parts of the job you’re not able to do. You may need to address these items in the interview process but remain optimistic that your experience learning new skills can get you up to speed quickly for the right employer. Make this a benefit for the company to not have to break old habits as you learn to work with them.

Custom Employees Reviews Make Everyone Happier

November 2nd, 2017

Employee reviews can feel like a “necessary evil” but they don’t have to be. In fact, many experts believe that a tailored review process can lead to more engagement and happier employees. So how exactly do you go about improving your review process to ensure everyone is heard and the right improvements are being made? Here are just a few things you can do to personalize your review process and improve your employee satisfaction.

Tailor the review to your employees’ personalities.

Your employees aren’t cookie cutter people, so it’s important not to treat their reviews the same way. Everyone will have different needs, require different kinds of feedback, and have different motivations. As a manager, it’s your job to determine how someone will react to a review and adjust your approach accordingly. This will help make everyone happier on the job.

Determine what makes them tick.

You need to find out what makes them tick as a person. What are their motivations? Do they love to learn? Do they like variety? How do they react in a stressful situation? It’s okay to ask them these kinds of questions in their reviews which will help you both create an action plan that fits with their goals and personality.

Emphasize how each employee makes a difference.

All of your employees want to feel as though they are contributing to the company. This may be more pronounced with some personalities, but everyone cares. Makes sure within the context of reviews, you emphasize how their contribution makes a difference in the overall success of the company.

Create an action plan for management as well.

In your employee reviews, you give each worker an action plan to ensure they are making the right improvements and adjustments. Allow your employees to ask you to do the same. Ask them what management could do to make their jobs easier or happier. Take their answers into consideration and create an action plan to make a difference.

You Had an Interview and Aren’t Getting a Response from HR… What Do You Do Now?

October 26th, 2017

There are few things more frustrating than not hearing back from a company. This can be annoying after you submit an application but can be positively anxiety-inducing after an interview. If you’re not getting a response from their human resources or hiring representatives, what can you do to expedite the process? There is an art to following up, so it’s important to know how and when. Here are some things to consider moving forward.

Talk to your recruiter.

If you’ve been working with a staffing agency, your first stop should be contacting your recruiter. They become the conduit between you and the potential employer and can help field any communications throughout the process. Give them a call or shoot them an email to see if they can determine where their clients are in making a decision.

Follow up.

Of course, it’s okay for you to follow up as well. In fact, at your interview you should always be sure to ask when they expect to make a decision and follow up just before that time. When you do, make sure that you sound confident and interested but not desperate. Desperation comes across a needy, and the company wants someone who doesn’t need a lot of hand-holding.

Determine a timeline.

When you’re following up, it’s important that you determine the right timeline so you’re not just bothering the hiring manager for the sake of it. The hiring manager has other duties along with filling this position, so a little contact can go a long way. After the interview, send a thank you note to reiterate interest. Then follow up at the time indicated in the interview. After that, follow up one or two more times.

Continue searching.

Throughout this process, make sure you’re not putting all your eggs in just one basket. Never stop your search just because you feel great about a particular job interview. There will always be more qualified candidates than a company can hire, so you’re not guaranteed the position. Keep searching and don’t lose your momentum.
