How Does Taking Care of Yourself Translate to Your Career?

July 14th, 2016

Being the best person you can be will undoubtedly translate to being a better employee. It is important that you take care of yourself not only professionally but also physically and emotionally to give yourself all of the best opportunities for success. As you determine what you need to do to advance your career, consider ensuring that you’re also spending equal time focusing on these self-care items to improve your attitude, your health, and your career success.

Sleep

Millions of Americans actually face every workday completely sleep deprived. Getting enough sleep is essential for good health. Start by giving yourself a firm bedtime. Create a routine to help you relax. Don’t eat before bed and turn off all of your media for a half an hour so your body can naturally sleep.

Exercise

On the flip side, activity is as important as inactivity in this regard. Most people avoid exercise because they claim they don’t have time. But it is essential that we make time to allow our bodies to get the right amount of exercise each and every day. That exercise will also provide more energy for the rest of your day.

Water

It is also quite possible that you’re moving through the day at some level of dehydration. The classic advice was eight 8-ounce cups of water a day. In truth, medical professionals suggest more. Men should drink 13 ounces while women should consume about nine. But since the 8/8 rule is easy to remember, start there.

Diet

Dieting has become a negative word in our culture. And, in truth, you don’t need any fad diet to remain healthy. It is more important that you’re conscientious about what you consume. Focus on finding a healthy balance that works for you long term. A healthy eating plan is easier to maintain.

Education

Your mental health is equally as important, so make sure that you are continuously learning new things. Learn about your industry, but also take time to learn about anything else that interests you. The more you read, the better your memory and retention skills become.

Travel

There is a lot of evidence to support that people who travel are more well-rounded than those who don’t. Learning about cultures helps you understand the perspectives of others even in your own back yard. Travel helps you expand your mind to new ideas and new ways of thinking.

Positivity

Lastly, take some time to consider your overall attitude. Complaining and negativity don’t serve your long-term well-being. Instead, start to think about the positive things. Keep a gratitude journal and write down the things you’re thankful for each day to start a positive habit.

Change These 4 Areas to See Personal Improvement

February 25th, 2016

How you function in your personal and at-home life can easily influence how successful, or stressed out, you are at work every day. Do you sometimes feel overwhelmed? Do you have trouble focusing? Have you started to dread getting up and going to work every day? These may all be signs that you need to make some changes. But before you make drastic changes, consider these four small alterations you can start with to see improvement in your work day.

Commit to more sleep.

Often in offices, you’ll hear people bragging about how little sleep they got because they are too busy being busy. Or, they may be plagued with insomnia because they are stressed. However, a lack of sleep can be the biggest contributor to an unfocused day. Commit to getting a complete night’s rest by choosing a reasonable bed time, turning off any media an hour before bed and creating a calming routine to help you drift to sleep.

Create a to-do list.

Each week, start out with a to-do list. Include four to five critical projects each day. When you complete a task, you can have the satisfaction of crossing it off. You can also compose daily lists that have the tasks broken out into individual steps, which can help you tackle a larger project. The key is to make a manageable to-do list that can keep you on track but not make things more difficult.

Ask questions.

Many people lose productivity because they are too proud to ask for help or get clarification on a project. Don’t be afraid to ask questions when something raises a concern for you. When you are assigned a new task, ask about any aspect that is slightly confusing. Clarify things you think you know how to do. And don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it. No one expects you to understand everything at the first time. Asking questions to get more clarification shows that you want to do the job correctly and care about its quality.

Be positive and optimistic.

Your attitude has a big impact on your success. Remaining positive and optimistic can help you not only get through a bad day but it can make every day more pleasant. Positive people are able to avoid complaining about negative situations and determine the right solutions instead. It can really change the way you approach everything in your job. Studies also show that optimistic employees with positive attitudes get promoted at higher rates than critical people with negative attitudes.
