Do You Know Why You Got the Job?

After a job search, few people take in to consideration something that may turn out to be incredibly important. Why were you hired? You may just care that you were hired, but it may not be enough information to make you successful. You were the best of the best, but what exactly put you over the top? Why did the company choose you over your competition? You might be surprised to find out that this answer could positively impact your career path with your new employer, if you take the time to find out. Here are some thoughts to get you started.

Ask during the onboarding process.

The first step is to take the time to learn. Ask the hiring manager or the person training you directly. Not only will this help you get the information you need to formulate a plan for your employment, but it will demonstrate to the company that you’re attentive and interested, even though you’ve already gotten the job. This will also help making the onboarding process more of a conversation than just an information dump, and you can build a relationship with your manager, co-workers, or trainer.

Understand what skills they value most.

You brought a lot of things to the table. But which of those things were instrumental to the hiring decision? They may have advertised for an administrative professional and listed a number of qualities that would make an idea candidate. But, in the long run, you had experience in their specific industry or some additional accounting background that they found not only intriguing, but valuable.

Use it to create a plan for your role.

Once you know the reason you were hired, you can decide how to proceed. If it was your skills in accounting, even though you are working in administrative support, find out ways you can utilize these skills outside of the actual job description. This can be a way for you to showcase these skills, solve the problem they didn’t know they had, and demonstrate that you are interested in a long term career within the company.

Make the conversation go both ways.

It feels good to be appreciated. So while you’re allowing yourself to feel appreciated by your new employer, share with them your decision making process. Let them know why you accepted the job. Was it the people you would be working with? Was it the overall company environment? Was it because you could see yourself growing in the job and being challenged? This will help them better understand what to focus on in the future when they’re interviewing new candidates down the line.
