How To Balance Your Work With Your Personal Life

January 30th, 2015

Work/life balance has become an important topic in today’s workplace. How exactly do you balance your career with your personal life? Failing to do so can lead to overwhelming stress both at home and at work as well as to health problems. Here are some ways you can reduce stress, perform better, enjoy your life, and truly have it all.

Give Yourself a Break

When you’re at the office be sure to take plenty of breaks throughout the day. Just five minutes away from your desk can be enough to recharge your batteries and get back to work. If you can, go outside and walk around the building or the block. Never feel like you need to be chained to your desk the entire nine hours of your work day.

Know When to Say No

So many people have trouble saying no to others. This can be your coworkers, managers, customers, friends, children, or spouse. Unfortunately, there are times when saying no is the smartest thing you can do. Learn when it is appropriate, when to ask for help when you need it, and how to say no to certain activities or projects without upsetting anyone.

Be Efficient about Time Management

It is important that you stay focused during the day. Many people fall in to the trap of multi-tasking. The truth is that the human brain is not designed to multi-task and it can quickly backfire and actually cause more work when something isn’t completed properly. Instead, you should focus on setting priorities. Each day determine your most important projects and complete them first.

Turn off Your Cell Phone

When you’re at home at night with your family or out with friends the most important thing you can do is turn off your cell phone. There are very few careers where your actual attention is needed past closing time so don’t become a slave to your device. Be in the present, enjoy the company of those your with, and take time to relax. Your mind and body will thank you for it later.
