So, what can you do to determine that someone will be a good fit with your current team and your company values? Here are a few tips on choosing the right candidate beyond the skills you see on paper.

Evaluate the Cover Letter

Some people think cover letters are no longer relevant. But we believe that not only are they relevant, but they can also provide a lot of insight to help you make the best hiring decision. Is the cover letter generic? Then the candidate may just be going through the motions. Do they tell you why you should consider hiring them? You want to see their accomplishments, not just a restatement of their skills.

Dive Deeper in the Interview

If we said you should ask more than just questions at the interview, what would you think we mean by that? You probably have a standard set of questions to determine if someone has the skills and background needed to accomplish job-related tasks. But you also should find out if someone is going to be a good long-term fit with your company. Ask questions about their core values to determine if they’re a fit with your mission and vision.

Use Their References

So many companies skip the reference checks during the hiring process, but this can be a big mistake. Sure, there are some companies you’ll call and get single word answers. But when references work, they’ll be well worth the time you took to make that call. Talk to former employers to find out how this person contributed and what makes them a great hire.

If you’re concerned about whether or not you’re making the right choice, consider a temp to hire arrangement. With temp to hire, you work with a staffing agency to bring a candidate on for a certain period of time. During that time frame, you can evaluate how they perform with your company and, if it doesn’t work out, talk with the agency about a replacement.
