Everyone in the class of 2020 will have an asterisk next to their name. It’s not a negative thing; it’s just the circumstances our world finds itself in as we figure out a new normal in the wake of COVID-19. Most students in their final semester engaged in remote classes and don’t expect to have a traditional graduation ceremony. Even in light of the current health crisis, graduating college students are still looking for their first jobs out of school. How can you find work as a recent graduate, this year and any year? Here are some tips to get you started.
Manage Your Expectation
Even in the most ordinary times, new college graduates need to keep their expectations in check. It’s highly unlikely that your very first job will be your dream job, and that’s okay. What you’re looking for when fresh out of college is experience and a chance to make a difference. If you can do those two things, you can leverage it to continue your professional job search in the future.
Build a Solid Resume
You also need to make sure you have a resume ready to go before you even start applying for jobs. A resume is an essential tool of the job seeker, but not everyone knows how to create an effective one. When you’re coming out of college, you may not have a ton of relevant experience, so check out how to create a resume using the skills you’ve learned and activities you’ve done to fill in the gaps.
Create Your Professional Brand
You may think branding is only for companies, but you can have a good personal brand. Today it’s more important than ever. At the very least, start with your social media presence. Make sure each social media platform is consistent with a similar look and feel. Ensure you have a professional profile picture on each one. You may also want to buy your domain name to create a website. You can use it as an online portfolio or even start a blog to show that you’re a subject matter expert.
Identify Job Opportunities
While you may not be able to do the recommended face-to-face networking right now, you can still use the technology we have available to us to find your next opportunity. Connect with companies online through social media. Look for online job postings. But also reach out to staffing agencies in your area to apply and talk to them about potential opportunities that will be a good fit for your skills and interests.
